Itinerary
DAY 1: CUSCO – KM 104 – Aguas Calientes
First, we will depart from your hotel in Cusco using our transportation to begin the Short Inca Trail to Machu Picchu adventure. We will head towards the town of Ollantaytambo in the Sacred Valley. Subsequently, a train will take us to our starting point, km 104 Chachabamba. Meanwhile, our adventure will begin along the banks of the Urubamba River. After a slow ascent, we will reach the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu in the Wiñay Wayna area. After that, we will continue to the “Gate of the Sun” (Inti Punku) and subsequently to the Machu Picchu citadel.
Additionally, along our route through the cloud forest, we will traverse its lush and verdant landscapes. For example, cloud forests that completely cover the mountains. Similarly, we will appreciate an immense variety of plants, flowers, and birds along the Inca paths. On the other hand, we will be able to observe some mammals such as viscachas (a rabbit-like animal similar to the chinchilla) and the spectacled bear (if we are lucky).
Therefore, after a full day of hiking, we will reach the Gate of the Sun (Inti Punku). Here, we will obtain our first views of the Machu Picchu citadel. Similarly, the light at this time of day is ideal for taking photographs, especially taking advantage of the few number of tourists in the morning hours.
Subsequently, we will descend from the Gate of the Sun and continue along the beautiful stone-paved path to Machu Picchu. However, only up to the famous “Viewpoint” at the top of the citadel. Finally, from here, we will descend to the town of Aguas Calientes, which is located in the lower valley to check in at the hotel and have dinner.
- Accommodation: in Aguas Calientes.
