Community Based Tourism Cultural Zone in the Kosñipata Valley – Manu 4 Days / 3 Nights

In Santa Rosa de Huacaria, there are three ethnic groups: the Machiguenga, the Wachipaire, and the Quechua.
This unique coexistence of three languages makes the area very attractive for both national and international tourists.
The community of Huacaria is located within the boundaries of the Manu National Park.

DAY 1: Cusco Andes – Cloud Forest – Pilcopata Lodge

Departing early from Cusco, we will visit the Pre-Inca Tombs of Ninamarca and the colonial town of Paucartambo, known as the folkloric center of the region.
The next stop is at Acjanacu (3,560 meters / 11,700 feet), the entrance to the Manu Biosphere Reserve, where we will enjoy a panoramic view of the Amazon Basin.

From there, we will descend through various ecological zones, including the highland puna, the Elf Forest, and finally into the lush Cloud Forest. Along the way, we may spot endemic flora and fauna, butterflies, giant ferns, orchids, monkeys, and birds such as toucans, tanagers, and more.

The cloud forest is home to Peru’s national bird, the Cock-of-the-Rock (Rupicola peruviana), which we will observe at its lek, as well as the Spectacled Bear (Tremarctos ornatus), the only bear species native to South America.

After lunch, we will visit a butterfly sanctuary in Chontachaca, which showcases various butterfly species native to the region.
We will spend the night in our comfortable and traditional lodge in Pilcopata.

DAY 2: Pilcopata Lodge – Native Community – Lodge

The goal of the day is to learn about the culture of the Machiguenga and Huachipaire peoples who live in the native community of Santa Rosa de Huacaria, located just 4 km from the lodge.

Early in the morning, after breakfast, we head to the community. This is a place where ancient knowledge is preserved, although the people have been increasingly forced to adapt to a modern system.

We’ll take part in a participatory workshop, based on the activities selected by the visitors, such as handicraft making or learning about medicinal plants in the bio-gardens. After that, we’ll enjoy a box lunch.

To finish our day’s activities, we’ll take a refreshing swim in the river that runs through the village.
In the afternoon, we return to the lodge for dinner and a good night’s rest.

DAY 3: Lodge – Town of Atalaya – Riverside Lodge:

We begin with a 45-minute journey to Atalaya (500 meters above sea level, in the tropical rainforest), where we will board our motorized canoe that will take us 40 minutes downstream to our lodge, located on the banks of the powerful Alto Madre de Dios River.

We’ll spend the day exploring the surrounding area and fascinating trails that reveal an incredible ecosystem. In a small lagoon and a mysterious swamp, we may have the chance to spot the prehistoric hoatzin, caimans, capybaras, squirrel monkeys, and various species of birds.

After dinner, we’ll enjoy the sounds of the Amazon night, including the nocturnal monkey (Aotus trivirgatus), Kalinowski’s rat, giant tree frogs, Potto frogs, and the pygmy owl, among other creatures of the night, during a night walk.
