Manu Amazonian and Cultural 5 Days

Itinerary

DAY 1.- CUSCO ANDES – CLOUD FOREST – ECO FREDY´S HOUSE LODGE

Leaving early from Cusco, we will pass by the pre-Inca tombs of Ninamarca, the colonial town of Paucartambo known as the folkloric center of the region. The next stop is Acjanacu (3530 m / 11,870 ft), which is the entrance to the Manu biosphere, to get an overview of the Amazon. After that, we will descend through different ecological levels such as the puna, the dwarf forest, and the cloud forest. Along the way, we can see endemic flora and fauna such as butterflies, giant ferns, orchids, monkeys, birds like toucans, tanagers, etc. The Cloud Forest is home to Peru’s national bird, the “Cock-of-the-Rock” (Rupicola peruviana, we visit its lek) and the spectacled bear (Tremarctus ornatus) – the only bear found in South America. We will spend the night at our comfortable and typical lodge.

DAY 2. – ECO FREDY´S HOUSE LODGE – ATALAYA PORT RAINFOREST – LODGE

45-minute trip to Atalaya (500 m above sea level) where we will board our motorized canoe that will take us to the lodge (2 hours downstream) located on the banks of the mighty Alto Madre de Dios River. Here, we will spend the day exploring the surroundings and the very interesting trails that will show us an incredible ecosystem, a very beautiful and pristine rainforest that provides us the opportunity to spot unique Amazonian species.

At night, a nocturnal hike is the best option to search for insects, frogs, snakes, as well as mammals and birds.

DAY 3. – LODGE – PARROT COLLPA – EXPLORE THE FOREST – RETURN TO THE FIRST LODGE.

Very early, we will take a 3-hour hike exploring the interesting trails; an opportunity to find more flora and fauna. After breakfast, we will navigate upstream to another lodge, along the way enjoying the hot springs. In the afternoon, we will visit a small lagoon and a mysterious swamp where we have the opportunity to see the prehistoric Hoatzin, some caimans, capybaras, squirrel monkeys, and different species of birds. After dinner, we will listen to sounds of the Amazonian night such as the Night Monkey (Aotus trivirgatus), the Kalinowski Rat, frogs, Potoos, and the Pygmy Owl among many other night inhabitants during a nocturnal hike.

DAY 4. – LODGE – PARROT COLLPA – RETURN TO THE FIRST LODGE.

Very early, at 5 am, we will navigate by boat for 20 minutes downstream to observe the parrot collpa, where different species of parrots and parakeets put on a colorful and impressive display; After breakfast, we will return to the first lodge to then visit the native community of Huacaria. The objective is to learn about the culture of the Matshiguenka and Huachiperi. The community is located near the first lodge.

DAY 5. – LODGE – CUSCO

After breakfast, we will return to Cusco, one more hike in the cloud forest will conclude our activities, arriving in Cusco at approximately 5 pm. (B, L)
