Full Day City Tour in Cusco

Wednesday, 6 November, 2024 | Traditional Tours | 0 Comentarios

Itinerary

First, our City Tour in Cusco begins at Qoricancha, also known as the Temple of the Sun. It was built by orders of Inca Pachacutec (1438 – 1572). When the Spanish arrived, it became the foundation of the Convent of Santo Domingo. During the Inca Empire, the temple was dedicated to the worship of the Sun God, “Inti.”

After that, we will head to Sacsayhuaman, one of the most emblematic places of the Inca Empire. It was built by Inca Pachacutec in the 15th century and is a structure made of enormous carved stones, approximately 9 meters tall, weighing at least 100 tons each. They are arranged in an organized and perfectly positioned way to form three platforms, each 390 meters long.

Then, continuing the city tour in Cusco, we go to the archaeological park of Qenqo, a center of worship and ceremonies dedicated to Mother Earth. History tells us that this was an amphitheater of cults where Inca bodies were placed for ceremonies, laid on trapezoidal structures found there.

PUCA PUCARA AND TAMBOMACHAY

Our next stop will be Puca Pucara, also known as the “Red Fort” because the stones used for its construction have turned this color due to high iron levels. Other archaeological structures can be appreciated here, including aqueducts, enclosures, and fountains. Due to its proximity to Tambomachay and its characteristics, it is believed to have served as a military defense for this site.

Finally, our last stop on the city tour in Cusco will be Tambomachay, located only 100 meters from Puca Pucara. It is made of carved rocks, forming a beautiful set of channels and waterfalls fed by natural springs. Most importantly, Tambomachay was a place for worshiping water.

DAY 1: PISCACUCHO – WAYLLABAMBA (12 KM)

First, after breakfast, we will move to the starting location of the classic Inca Trail, known as km 82. This first day is relatively easy and flat while we move along archaeological sites to visit such as Patallacta.

This archaeological site, built at the foot of the mountain, was an important center for administrative, economic, and religious functions. Additionally, we will visit Willkarakay, an Inca military post located near the Patallacta area.

After that, we will enter the Wayllabamba Valley, walking along the banks of the Cusicacacha River (Happy River). Furthermore, we will observe Inca terraces belonging to the previously mentioned archaeological sites.

As a result, we gradually continue our hike until we reach our first camping area located in Wayllabamba.

  • Accommodation: Camp

DAY 2: WAYLLABAMBA – PACAYMAYU (11 KM)

We will start our day very early to reach by the end of the day the highest point of the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, the Warmihuañusca Pass (Abra of the Dead Woman). The first trek of the classic Inca Trail in the morning is somewhat physically intense, especially for those not accustomed to hiking at this altitude.

During the first part of the classic Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, we will walk for approximately one and a half hours through the cover of a dense Andean forest until we reach the camping area called “Tres Piedras,” where we will take a short break. Subsequently, during the ascent, the ecosystem of the area will begin to change as we enter the inter-Andean forest, where we can appreciate a large number of Unca trees, unique to this area.

Two hours later, we will arrive at another camping area: Llulluchapampa. Here we will rest with snacks and hot beverages. This will mark the beginning of the final ascent to the Warmihuañusca Pass at 4,215 meters (13,829 ft), the highest point of our hike. After that, we will descend for a few hours to our next camping area in Pacaymayu to spend the night.

  • Accommodation: Camp

DAY 3: PACAYMAYU – WIÑAYHUAYNA (15 KM)

Similarly, this day we start with an approximate 45-minute ascent to the archaeological site of Runkurakay. Subsequently, another 45-minute ascent will take us to the second highest pass of the 4-day Inca Trail, Runkurakay (3,950m or 12,959 ft). After that, we will descend to the picturesque archaeological site of Sayacmarca. Then, after a detailed visit to the site, we will descend through the beautiful stone-paved path to have lunch at the Chaquicocha site.

Then, from here onward to Phuyupatamarca, we will delve into a high area of the Andean cloud forest. Here, the trail continues along a narrow Andean foothill until we reach the Phuyupatamarca Pass. A place from which it is possible to appreciate the Sacred Valley and numerous mountain peaks, as well as our final destination: Machu Picchu.

Therefore, we will descend to the last camping area, passing an important archaeological site, as well as a temple designated for making offerings to the spirits of the sacred mountains in the area, along with a wide terrace area. Finally, moving a little further, our last camping spot of the 4-day Inca Trail awaits us in the Wiñayhuayna area.

  • Accommodation: Camp

DAY 4: WIÑAYHUAYNA – MACHU PICCHU (5 KM)

We will wake up very early to complete the final stretch of the classic Inca Trail, which will lead us to Inti Punku or the “Gate of the Sun,” the main entrance to the radiant citadel of Machu Picchu. Similarly, the trail will be quite easy, and after approximately one hour of hiking, we will arrive at Inti Punku, a stunning location to view the Machu Picchu citadel. Treks to Choquequirao 4D / 3N

Wednesday, 6 November, 2024 | Treks to Machupicchu | 0 Comentarios

The Choquequirao Trek is perfect for those who seek to get away from the crowds or who are looking for something more than Machu Picchu during their trip. The hike takes you to Machu Picchu’s sister city, Choquequirao (The Golden Cradle), which is located high in the Apurímac Valley.

With a wide variety of flora and fauna, beautiful landscapes, and a visit to an important Inca site, the Choquequirao Trek is the adventure of a lifetime.

Itinerary

Day 1: Cusco – Cachora – Santa Rosa

Our first day begins in the town of Cachora, a 4-hour drive from Cusco. Departing from Cachora, the road makes its way towards the Apurímac Valley, and we will have fantastic views of the snow-capped peaks in the distance and the Apurímac Valley stretching out before us all day. Also, after a few hours of hiking, we will have our first views of Choquequirao sitting on the far side of the valley. The area around Choquequirao is rich in life, and we will see a wide variety of flora and fauna as we delve into the valley.

Our campsite for the night is in Santa Rosa (2200m / 7215ft.), which is on the other side of the Apurímac River. Since the campsite is a bit further along the trail than where most groups go, it is one of the quietest places to camp throughout the trek, allowing us to enjoy the beautiful surrounding landscape without distractions.

Day 2: Santa Rosa – Choquequirao

Today is probably the most difficult day of the trek. To reach Choquequirao, we must make our way back on the opposite side of the Apurímac Valley, which involves ascending about 800m / 2624ft over a distance of 14km / 8.7 miles in warm and humid conditions. It is quite challenging, but the views we gain today, combined with the wide variety of flora and fauna you encounter on this side of the valley, make it worthwhile.

Throughout the day, we will see a wide variety of bromeliads, orchids, and bamboo thickets; with luck, we will also see birds such as quetzals, toucans, and a variety of hummingbirds. After approximately 5 hours of hiking, we will arrive at our campsite near Choquequirao (3050m / 10,005ft) and settle in for the night. If the weather is clear, the sunset views from here are incredible, and we may be lucky enough to see condors flying over the valley.

Day 3: Choquequirao – Chiquiska

Today’s focus is to explore Choquequirao. Upon waking up early, you will embark on a guided tour of the site during which the most important and interesting sections of the city will be shown to you, and you will learn about Inca culture and the close relationship between Choquequirao and Machu Picchu.

Compared to Machu Picchu, little is known about Choquequirao despite it being known for much longer. Originally discovered in the 17th century by the Spaniards, it was abandoned and forgotten until recently, when tourism raised the city’s profile and exploration began. Even with this increased interest, only 25% of the city has been explored, and many of its secrets still await discovery.

After your tour, you will begin the hike back to Cachora along the route we came. Our campsite for this night is Chiquiska (1800m / 5905ft) at the base of the valley next to the Apurímac River.

Day 4: Chiquiska – Cachora – Cusco

Today is the final stretch of the hike as we return to Cachora. Following our way back along the valley side, we will have our final views of Choquequirao in the distance before arriving in Cachora in the late afternoon and traveling by bus back to Cusco.

During our journey, we will have panoramic views of the majestic Salkantay snow-capped mountain, snowy peaks, and the Apurímac River valley. After lunch, we will continue walking towards Lake Humantay, a beautiful lake nestled among the mountains (in fact, many people only do the 1-day Salkantay Tour, which includes a visit to Humantay Lagoon). Finally, after our visit to Humantay Lagoon, we will return to our camp for dinner and overnight.

DAY 2: SORAYPAMPA – SALKANTAY PASS – HUAYRACMACHAY – COLLPAPAMPA (B)(L)(D)

To start our day, we will enjoy a delicious early breakfast and then begin our ascent of approximately 1 to 2 hours to the high pass, the Salkantay Pass (4,650 meters / 15,255 feet). From here, the views at this elevation are spectacular, surrounded by glaciers and the view of the valley below.

As we descend, the ecosystems will change from alpine, and the vegetation will gradually increase. If we’re lucky, it will be possible to see local birds and mammals as we walk. Our lunch will be in the community of Huayraqmachay, still at elevations near the glacier.

After lunch, we will descend and feel the abrupt change in climate as we enter the humid cloud forest, with dense vegetation and more wildlife. After approximately 4 hours, we will arrive at Collpapampa (2,920 meters / 9,580 feet). Here, the climate is more tropical and full of wildlife, as well as abundant flora. Our camp will be near the river and within the forest.

DAY 3: COLLPAPAMPA – SAYAHUACO – HYDROELECTRIC STATION – Aguas Calientes (B)(L)(D)

Our hike continues today through the dense vegetation of the high Andean jungle and fruit fields. Bananas, coffee, avocados, and cacao are the most common in this area. The landscape turns into waterfalls, and we observe a variety of orchids and many birds around. Then we will stop for lunch in the community of Sayahuaco (2,064 meters / 6,771 feet), followed by a short car ride to the hydroelectric station. Finally, from here, we will continue on foot to Aguas Calientes (2,050 meters / 6,571 feet) for approximately 3 hours.

NOTE: It is optional to take a short train ride here instead of walking for an additional cost of US$31. Upon arriving in Aguas Calientes, we will meet our hotel and settle in before gathering to have dinner at a local restaurant.

  • Accommodation: Hotel in Aguas Calientes

DAY 4: MACHU PICCHU – CUSCO (B)

This is the most important day, when we visit one of the wonders of the world, the majestic citadel of Machu Picchu. We will wake up early to have breakfast and board the bus to Machu Picchu, and if we’re lucky, we will receive the first rays of the sunrise illuminating this magical mountain. The guided tour of the Machu Picchu Historical Sanctuary will last approximately 2 hours, exploring this marvelous otherworldly place. Later, we will begin our return to Aguas Calientes to have lunch and rest before our afternoon train to Ollantaytambo.
